The Institute of Laser for Postgraduate Studies at University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis entitled: “Role of Salivary pH in the Identification of Periodontitis Stages via Optical Fiber Sensor”, presented by the student Farah Aqeel Abid, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Abdul Hadi Matshar Abid.
The study aimed to develop a non-invasive optical sensing system based on Multimode Interference (MMI) technique using an SMF–NCF–SMF structure, to identify the stages of periodontitis by measuring the change in salivary pH. The system relies on the self-imaging phenomenon within the multimode fiber, where a change in pH value leads to a wavelength shift that can be detected and analyzed with high accuracy.
The results showed a clear linear relationship between pH value and spectral shift, with good sensitivity and fast response time, making the proposed technique promising for developing an immediate and non-invasive clinical diagnostic device for early detection of disease stages.
The thesis was accepted for fulfilling the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Medical Laser and Optical Fiber Technologies.
