Laser-Assisted Frenectomy for Ankyloglossia: A Clinical Study Using Diode Laser (810–980 nm)
was discussed at the Institute of Laser for Postgraduate Studies – University of Baghdad.

The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using diode laser in performing frenectomy for the treatment of ankyloglossia, and to investigate its effect on several clinical outcomes, including pain, bleeding, edema, tissue healing, improvement of oral function and patient satisfaction, and to compare its results with the conventional surgical method using a scalpel.
The study included a comparative clinical procedure between two groups of patients. One group underwent tongue-tie release using diode laser, while the other group was treated with the conventional surgical method. Clinical outcomes were evaluated during specific follow-up periods using validated clinical measures to assess the severity of pain, bleeding, wound healing, edema, oral function and patient satisfaction.
The study employed diode laser within a wavelength range of 810–980 nm, and examined the effect of laser characteristics on soft tissues and the possibility of utilizing it to perform tongue-tie release more efficiently and with less tissue trauma.
The results showed the superiority of diode laser technique in a number of clinical indicators compared to the conventional method, particularly in reducing bleeding, pain and edema, and improving tissue healing and patient satisfaction, which highlights the potential of using diode laser as an effective option in the treatment of ankyloglossia cases.
The study emphasizes the importance of employing modern laser technologies in dentistry, especially in soft tissue surgeries, for the clinical advantages they provide that can contribute to improving patient experience and treatment outcomes.
The thesis was accepted with an Excellent grade, as it met the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Laser Applications Sciences.
