The master’s thesis defense of graduate student Mais Yahya Kadhim in Laser Applications
The Institute of Laser for Postgraduate Studies / University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis submitted by student Mais Yahya Kadhim, titled:
“The Influence of Dual Diode Laser in Management of Labial Frenulum”

The researcher presented a comparative randomized clinical study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of dual-wavelength diode laser (980-810 nm) in performing labial frenectomy compared to the conventional surgical technique using a scalpel, in patients with abnormal labial frenulum attachment.
The study was conducted on 50 patients (41 females and 9 males) aged between 12 and 55 years. They were randomly divided into two equal groups:
The first group was treated with the conventional surgical technique using a scalpel (blade No. 15), and the second group was treated using a dual-wavelength diode laser device (QuickLase, UK) with a 300 µm optical fiber at 1.2 W in continuous wave (CW) mode.
The researcher assessed the outcomes using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain measurement, in addition to standardized clinical indicators to evaluate bleeding, edema, functional recovery, and patient satisfaction, during follow-up periods on the first day, and the first, second, and fourth weeks post-surgery. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS version 26 and the Mann-Whitney U test.
The results showed a statistically significant superiority of the laser group compared to the scalpel group in all studied parameters. The laser group recorded a significant reduction in pain, bleeding, and edema scores from the first day post-surgery (P < 0.001), and these symptoms almost completely subsided by the second week, whereas they persisted longer in the scalpel group. The laser group was also characterized by the absence of the need for suturing, faster recovery of oral function (speech, lip movement, chewing), and a higher level of patient satisfaction throughout the follow-up period.
The study concluded that labial frenectomy using dual-wavelength diode laser is an effective and minimally invasive method that provides better hemostasis, less postoperative pain, faster healing, and higher patient satisfaction, making it a reliable alternative to the conventional surgical technique in dental practice.
The thesis was approved after fulfilling the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Laser Sciences / Dentistry.
