A Master’s thesis submitted by the student Sabreen Jalal Jassim, titled:
Enhancement of Sensitivity in Fiber Optic Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor Using Nanomaterial for Biomarkers Detection
was discussed at the Institute of Laser for Postgraduate Studies – University of Baghdad.

The study aimed to enhance the sensitivity of fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance sensors using nanomaterials, and to employ their optical properties in improving sensor performance for biomarker detection.
The study included two interconnected practical parts. The first part addressed the study of the optical properties of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye, and the study of its behavior in the presence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂), with an evaluation of the effect of irradiation using a green laser with a wavelength of 532 nm and sunlight.
The second part involved the development and study of a sensor based on fiber optics and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for the detection of the Cancer Antigen 125 (CA-125) biomarker, by comparing the response of bare optical fibers and gold-coated fibers, and studying the effect of using Rhodamine B and TiO₂ in enhancing the sensor response and sensitivity.
The study highlights the possibility of integrating nanomaterials and active optical materials with fiber-optic sensing techniques to develop an optical method with improved efficiency for biomarker detection.
The thesis was accepted with an Excellent grade, as it met the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Laser Applications Sciences.
