The thesis of higher diploma student Ali Abdel-Amir Khazal has been discussed in laser applications / general surgery, for his entitled thesis:
“Endoscopic Laser-power augmented Dacryocystorhinostomy”, where the discussion committee consisted of gentlemen listed below:
1- Inst. Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan / Ph.D. Laser / Laser Applications and Eye Surgery / Institute of laser for Postgraduate Studies / University of Baghdad / As Chairman
2- Dr. Laith Ali Mahmoud / Board / Ear, Nose and Throat / Hospital for Specialized Surgery / Medical City / Ministry of Health / As a Member
3 Dr. Ali Nima Abu Shaneen / Board / Ophthalmology / Ophthalmology / Ibn Al-Haytham Teaching Eye Hospital / Ministry of Health / As a Member and Supervisor
Where the aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness and degree of safety of using the 980 nm diode laser device supported by using a piezo bone cutting device to treat lacrimal duct obstruction endoscopically to increase success rates and reduce recurrence rates.
The study included the use of laser and the help of the endoscope with the use of the piezo device, which was useful in saving time, increasing the accuracy in locating the lacrimal sac, and creating a large bony opening that reduces the rates of return.
Patients and Methods: A prospective study was conducted on twenty patients at Ibn Al-Haytham Eye Specialized Hospital, Baghdad-Iraq, using a 980 nm diode laser in addition to a 980 nm piezo osteotomy and dacryocystectomy.
Results: No real complications occurred in the sample of 20 patients. The anatomical success rate was 85% (17/20), and the success rate with symptom resolution was 90% (18/20). We did not change the operation plan to the traditional operation by making an external incision in any of the patients
One of the most important recommendations reached by this study is to increase the number of patients undergoing intervention to confirm the results and follow them up for a longer period.
The researcher has obtained a higher diploma with a grade of “excellence” due to his real efforts in preparing the thesis.
